Use of Drones on University Property

The use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) a/k/a Drones, for hire or otherwise, is only permitted on Columbia University property for educational or research purposes and for the benefit of Columbia University. In order to operate a Drone/UAS on Columbia University property, the operator must provide the following information to the Risk Management Department at riskmagament@columbia.edu.

 

Students, Faculty Members, Researchers and Employees

  1. An explanation outlining the purpose, agenda, personnel involved, time/date start/end, requirements, and other logistics in operating the UAS/Drone.
  2. Awareness and compliance with all city, state and federal laws governing the use of UAS/Drones.
  3. Must be age of 21 years of age.

Outside Vendors Only

  1. A contract providing insurance and indemnification language as well as an explanation outlining the purpose, agenda, personnel involved, time/date start/end, requirements, and other logistics in operating the UAS/Drone.
  2. Proof of General Liability Insurance (Primary and Umbrella/Excess), Auto, and WC and Professional Liability (if applicable) insurance.
  3. Awareness and compliance with all city, state and federal laws governing the use of UAS/Drones.
  4. Must be age of 21 years of age.
  5. A Certificate of Insurance naming The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York as an additional insured under the General Liability Policy with a minimum of $5.0 M limits (a minimum of $1.0 M primary CGL and the remainder Umbrella/Excess) written on an occurrence basis.
  6. Agreement to defend and indemnify Columbia University in the event of an accident resulting from the commercial user’s (vendor) negligence. Agreement that any available insurance Columbia may have in the event of an accident will be excess and non-contributory to the vendor’s policy.
  7. Proof of experience in operating a UAS/Drone of any size.
