We are the part of the Finance Division that performs the operational and accounting functions for all payroll activity at the University. We work directly and in conjunction with Human Resources (who oversees People@Columbia) to insure all payroll activities are performed correctly, efficiently and in accordance with all compliance requirements.
The Payroll Operations group is dedicated to the accurate and timely issuance of all payroll payments to the University’s Faculty and Support Staff. This includes providing excellent customer service in answering all pay related inquiries to the satisfaction of the employee and department. Annual tax form issuance includes the print and distribution of W-2 and 1099R forms before the IRS issued deadlines.
Payroll Accounting includes Labor Accounting as well as Liability Accounting. The Labor Accounting group monitors the assignment of all University payroll expense assuring correct account/sub code allocations and assisting departments in clearing suspense items. The Liability Accounting group ensures compliance with all payroll tax laws, disbursements of all withholdings/obligations, and reconciliation of all payroll accounts.
Columbia University went live with the PeopleSoft Human Resource/Benefits/Payroll integrated system in 2004. It is managed jointly between Central HR and Finance Payroll. Also called People@Columbia or Manager Self-Service, this system replaced several stand alone applications such as PIS, BIS and GEAC with a state of the art web based real time system. It also introduced an employee self service capability allowing paycheck viewing, benefits viewing, and a W-4 update function. The system is managed by CU Human Resources. In May, 2011, the PAC Labor Accounting modules were launched. PAC was updated to a new version in 2014.
